Symbols That Inspire Fashion Designers

The clothes we wear convey style, taste and state of mind. In portrayal of this end and maximising expenditure we tread wisely, avoiding the expensive dips and dives of high fashion. In a designer led society more emphasis is placed on style longevity and less on periodic fashion we identify through the symbols embodied in the branding.

Symbolizing is commonly used in fashion to create an anchor or unique identity for brands; depicts history and progress and characterizes their motives to differentiate from competitors. Some notable innovators include Malcolm Mcclarens use of computer game symbols in a range of childrens clothing.

This is cementing an epilogue in style that is influenced by technology, history in the making.

To keep pace with this convoluted industry there is the net to surf, high street stores for window shopping and business fashion weeklys to subscribe to. And a myriad of blog sites and social network channels to navigate and gather useful knowledge and information.

Gervaise an adroit caricature and great ambassador for the well loved Simon Carter brand. He can make paper planes, type, ride a scooter and direct, you immediately associate it with the brand as believable and trustworthy and faithful as a hound.

The iconic orb for Vivienne Westwood and her low tech simplistic approach to creating pattern using a potato stamp. It appears on every product produced, woven into silk ties, stamped into the stems of cufflinks, jewellery and clothing collections.

We are also bombarded with symbols every time we buy a fashion garment, the bar code. And the adoption of a symbol that is thousands of years old, the hour glass, which now appears on every computer screen attached to the cursor arrow.

Names have also been created to anchor brands and give a strong personal trustworthy appeal; Ted Baker: When Raymond S. Kelvin opened a men’s shirt shop called Ted Baker in Glasgow in 1988, he had big ambitions but not a lot of money. So rather than advertise, he relied on word of mouth and the creation of a personality to anchor the brand.

Enter Ted Baker, or Ted, as this mythical man is often called. He is a bit quirky and the embodiment of cool. Ted’s an English lad who likes fishing, travelling, dogs, and partying. He’s also the type that always knows what to wear and what to say. The Web site and some of the stores are set up so you feel you are in Ted’s house, complete with a dog (a statue, really). Even Kelvin’s mother, who helps out in the London stores, does her part to perpetuate the myth, wearing a name tag that reads: “Ted’s Mum.”

Ted has helped the company do big things. Kelvin, the company’s chief executive and, as he calls himself, “the closest man to Ted,” eschews traditional advertising. Instead, his business model relies on “quality products delivered with a strong brand image and personality,” he says.

Thomas pink: Pink was set up in 1984 by three Irish brothers James, Peter and John Mullen. Their idea was to reinvent the traditional Jermyn Street shirt, taking it to a wider, aspiration audience. The brand name Thomas Pink came from an 18th century London tailor known for making sought-after red hunting jackets. If you were lucky enough to own one, you were said to be in the pink.

Their first store opened in Chelsea, London, offering classic-cut shirts in stylish, bold weaves and colours. Further stores soon followed in the West End and City of London, their distinctive interiors, pink-and-black packaging, and much-admired shirts quickly attracting a loyal clientele.

What Are Jeggings And How To Wear Them

Sometimes we can feel a bit caught out with new words especially these days in fashion people just love to combine old words to make new ones. So the first time a friend mentioned jeggings to me I thought perhaps they had drunk a gin and tonic too many, and were trying to say leggings. Being a polite person I didn’t correct my friend, which was just as well considering I was not on top of the latest fashion invented words.

Jeggings are half jeans and half leggings. This doesn’t mean literally half in half but the fabric is stretchy like leggings but the look is typically an indigo jean look. The look has been fondly embraced by the likes of Beyonce, Mischa Barton and Pixie Geldof. People who are not so aware of the fashion writers’ reinvented words are just calling these denim leggings, which is a lot more obvious as to what you could expect from them. But for those of who you want to feel you know the fashion lingo, jeggings are the most trendy description for the jeans leggings combo. In the same way as you may have known about “shants” and “shresses”, which for the less fashionable amongst us are sheer pants and sheer dresses.

Jeggings have a big following, and have been termed by some as the most important fashion revolution of the 21st century. The reason for this as because they are so much more comfortable than normal skin tight jeans, and have the hip and sexy look of jeans without the lack of comfort. Some of the jeggings available to buy have nice finishes around the ankles which strengthen the jean look of the jeggings. Some others maybe look a bit scrunched up around the ends which can look sweet and authentic at the same time.

There are many varieties in finishes and colours but you will want to buy jeggings that look sleek and slinky and flattering. They can be teamed up with a loose fitting party top and summer sandals for a relaxed trendy look. Jeggings also look fabulous with tunic dresses. Some of the fashionable tunic dresses have animal prints, some with simple stylish designs and others with stars or hearts. There are also some gorgeous sleeveless tunic dresses for summer that look super cool with jeggings.

Talking about pairing your jeggings off with an animal tunic top or dress, maybe you need to talk about wearing a “tunimal” with our jeggings? Even some pregnant ladies are opting for jeggings as they are so comfortable and fit naturally with longer flowing garments, so making them suitable for maternity wear also.

When choosing your jeggings, the most flexible and trendy ones are a gorgeous indigo blue. You should look for nice contrast stitching, a good quality stretchy material, with a skinny fit. The waist should be firmly elasticated with high quality for comfort and style. Remember that the vast majority of people need to wear a high of some sort with jeggings to carry off this look in the best way.

History Of Fashion Acient Greek Fashion Accessories

This is the second part of the article on ancient Greek dress

Jewelry
Ancient Greeks had an affinity for earrings, bracelets, necklaces, brooches, and rings, made of metal and semiprecious stones. Precious metals were also used, but gold became popular only in the 6th century BC.

Jewelry evolved over time. During the Archaic period, jewelry pieces were simple and mainly functional. Such were the pins or brooches used to fasten the himation or the chiton, or the seal rings used to seal letters and important documents. By Hellenistic times goldsmiths had mastered their craft and jewelry featured an exquisite design and composition.

Footwear
The sandals were the common footwear for both men and women. The Greek sandal featured several straps, which stretched between the toes to the ankle in various fashions. They were minimal, light, and left the foot almost bare. Although high heels are considered to be a 16thcentury invention, already in ancient Greece women tried to make themselves taller by attaching cork sole to the leather sole. For travel or warfare, men wore fitted shoes – ankle-high or mid-calf length -and boots that either laced up or stayed on the foot with the help of a criss-cross thong at the toe.

Hats and head-dresses
Headgear came in different shapes and styles. There were several variations of a cone-shaped hat. The bonnet was another known style. The pilos was a brimless skull cap made from felt or wool. Women wore scarves, wrapped around the head. The saccus featured a tassel at the back as well as nets or snoods to hold the hair back. The petasos was made of woven straw. It featured a brim that could be turned up or down, and could also be fastened at the neck by a ribbon.

Hair styles
Hair styles for men and women were initially similar. In the early ages men wore their hair fussy with curls forming a crown around the forehead or braids wound around the head. But styles eventually were simplified and long hair became acceptable only for the elderly male, young men or boys.

Hair styles were known by names: the kepos was unkempt, the Hectorean style involved cutting and combing the hair backward into curls, and the Theseid featured strands of hair worn short at the forehead while the rest hung down longer at the back of the neck.

Young girls let their hair fall freely. Older women wore their hair long and let it fall loose over the shoulders. They could also wear their hair parted in the middle, waved, and scraped back so as to expose the ears. Sometimes, three or four strands, or spiral curls, were sectioned from the rest of the hair and styled so they hung down over the forehead while the rest of the hair hung down loosely at the back. Bands, ribbons, diadems, or strings of pearls added sophistication to hairdos.

Beauty and grooming
Make-up was used by most women. It consisted in applying a white base color to the face, rouge to the cheekbones, and painting one’s lips. The base color was often made of lead, which could have fatal consequences, while the rouge was made from vermilion or vegetables. Women would also use eye make-up, which involved Egyptian kohl and shadows in different colors. Eyebrows were groomed and, painted black.

Perfumes were very popular, especially the essences of violet, mint, myrrh, marjoram, and thyme. The Greeks often applied different scents to different body areas.

Women conditioned their skin on a daily basis, used depilatories to remove body hair, and used different concoctions on both their face and body.

Good physical shape was important for both sexes, although only men were allowed in the palestra – a complex devoted to exercise.

Born to Malayalee and Telugu parents, Samantha was brought up in Tamil Nadu and pursued a career in modelling during her late teens. Despite signing up to Ravi Varman’s Moscowin Kaveri in mid 2007, her first major release was the critically acclaimed Gautham Menon film, Ye Maaya Chesave, which got released in February 2010.

Early life and family Born on April 28, 1987 to a Malayalee mother and a Telugu father, Samantha was brought up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu becoming fluent in the Tamil language.

Career Despite signing up for three Tamil films in quick succession, Samantha’s first release was Indira Productions’ Gautham Menon directed, Ye Maaya Chesave. The film, a simultaneous remake of the Tamil film Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, created much anticipation prior to release, primarily due to the successful soundtrack from A. R. Rahman.

The actress was signed up for the project in mid August 2009 and completed schedules across India and the United States for the film which released in February 2010. The film portrays Samantha as the lead character of Jessie, which was also the working title of the film; a Malayalee Christian girl living in Hyderabad, whom the male protaganist, played by Naga Chaitanya falls in love with. Upon release, Samantha received very positive reviews for her portrayal, with the film also garnering much critical acclaim.Samantha, alongside her co-star, Naga Chaitanya, also appeared in a guest appearance in the Tamil version of the film.

The film introduced a host of new actors, with music carried out by Thaman, then making his debut in music composing. In an interview, much prior to release in 2008, Ravi Varman mentioned that he had decided that Samantha would be the lead actress for his film within three minutes after viewing one of her commercial assignments.

In the interview, he went on to describe her as an actress with “intelligence” and “potential”, whilst drawing comparisons with noted actress, Revathi. However, due to Ravi Varman’s date conflicts with his projects as a cinematographer, the film is still languishing in development hell, but is likely to release during 2010.

Samantha also signed up for the Narain starrer, Pookada Ravi in August 2008 to play the lead role of a modern girl. Despite the film, continuing schedules at regular intervals, the film has also faced severe delays and was stalled throughout 2009 with the film is likely to release during 2010. The Changing Scene In The Fashion Industry

There is much speculation about how shopping habits in the fashion industry are changing. Many of these stories and articles discuss online shopping and if it has completely disrupting physical, brick-and-mortar shopping. Sometimes it gets one-sided. Some like to think that stores will no longer exist while others believe there will always be a need for offline shopping. I recently attended and gave a speech at a national shopping and consumer habit summit. It’s a very important summit where people from many different industries gather to discuss and theorize the progression of shopping and how it is evolving and will evolve in the future. I normally don’t like summits or meetings and conventions because not a lot is often solved. It’s more like a lot of people want to get away from their normal lives and have a bit of fun.

If I’m to travel and be away from work and home, then it better be for good reason. But this was a really valuable summit where I think a lot of us exchanged some great ideas. We had execs from famous department stores and founders of exclusive online shopping destinations. It was a melting pot of offline and online retail.

The truth is, no one can predict what store or online site will stay open for business. Much of it comes down to speculation. But what we can decipher is that consumers will always like to shop. Take fast fashion for instance, young fashionistas love turning up to these stores on the weekends and definitely when they collaborate with big name designers. There is fast fashion online as well, but most of them don’t have the power behind them like the big box stores. Fashion changes at its own pace. It’s hard to say what will catch on as a trend and what people really want to buy. If a product becomes hot and it’s only available in stores, then that is where consumers will purchase it.

Offline shopping is still popular especially in nice and upscale shopping malls. Nothing can beat the beauty of a shiny, luxurious department store. You know the sort, those stores that feel as if you stepped inside an expensive jewel box. Humans are visual. We feast our eyes on our surroundings and take in everything. Look how popular Pinterest is. Women loving logging on to look at beautiful interiors. Those are interiors from real life. Think of those same lovely department stores, many of them have e-commerce sites.

However, when you log onto their sites and place an order, it’s often a letdown when the package arrives. The cardboard box contains some generic bubble wrap and their is no pretty packaging. So in a way, you receive better service in their physical stores.

Much in the world of fashion and shopping comes down to the customer experience. If an online shopping outlet gives amazing customer services and really nice packaging, customers will remember that. I personally love when my packages arrive well wrapped and with a handwritten thank-you card. One cannot take away from amazing customer service and attention to detail.

Most people that follow fashion know that the United States is six months behind on the styles that are hitting Europe. Appearances of elegant clothing that have been proven on the streets of London, Paris and Rome often find their way to the shops of New York after they have been widely accepted abroad. Celebrity Trend Setting

I did a bit more digging into Lady Gaga and her fantabulous sense of, um, fashion. What did I discover? She’s a trendsetter! Well, OK, I’ve known for a while that she sets fashion trends among the fashion elite but did you know she is setting trends all over the world of eyeglasses? She has frames that look like 3-D glasses. She wore frames that have small gold chains attached to the rim so it looks like window coverings. She has the most unconventional sunglasses in existence.

Elton John should be proud. He influenced someone where prescription glasses are concerned. In all honesty, Mizz Beyonc should be included in this category as well. Just like Lady Gaga, Beyonc experimented with her look this year and wore glasses similar to the chain frames worn by Lady Gaga. Lady B is a trend setter in her own right. Her look can go from 1960’s diva to couture queen all with the switch of her frames. Lady Gaga’s look goes from one extreme to the next.

These two fine young ladies got me thinking – what do we have in our own catalog that would resemble a unique look. What kind of glasses online do we have to copy their looks? Well, if you liked Lady Gaga’s sunglasses at the end of her Paparazzi video, you’ll probably like our Skylarframes. Just add a gray tint to the lenses and it’s a great replication! Like her frames from Bad Romance? Try on our Yoshi Ayaka 3079 frames in black or tortoise shell. The large frame is a throw back to the 1980’s and looks really cool with either gray or brown tinting.

If you like Beyonc’s “normal” sunglasses, look no further than the Yoshi Ayaka 3060. They’re very similar to Miss B’s “ordinary” sunglasses but look way cooler than most standard glasses. For a truly unique look, add a fashion tint like pink or orange – but don’t skip the ultra violet protection.

Beyonc is often seen wearing awesome aviator sunglasses. To replicate her look, try out our Marvin metal frame – which is larger in size for a badass look. For smaller frames, try the Brutus or Lewis frames which are similar to the Marvin frame but great for smaller faces. For a richer, more unique play on the aviator style, try our Maurice 2070 gold metal colored frames that have black plastic arms for a drastic effect.

One of my favorite Beyonc looks in eye wear are her larger than life black plastic bug-like sunglasses. They’re very chic and very 1960’s. To copy her look, look at our Congress black plastic frame and add a gray tint or gray polarized lenses for a chic, Parisian look.

These ladies may be trend setters but their trends shouldn’t cost a fortune or be hard to find. Create a trend of your own or personalize their trends!
